Spring Has Sprung

Spring has sprung it's head and the yard is in full bloom. I wish that you could have a slideshow on each post so that I could show you all of the beautiful flowers. I ended up posting a picture of the carolina yellow jessamine. Also blooming now, flowering quince, daffodils, crocus came and went, camelias, rosemary,  and forsythias. I will try to post more pictures of flowers soon.

With all of this sunshine and warm weather I have been dreaming of having a vegetable garden. I sat and planned one out this week. I really want the flavor of home grown veggies this year, and with Dave wanting to go low sodium and me wanting my veggies, homegrown is going to be the way to go. The initial investment might cost a chunk, but I am sure that it will be less than our grocery bills would be. I am planning on cucumbers, tomatoes, beets, celery, beans, basil, dill, cilantro, watermelon, cantaloupe, eggplant, baby pak choy, radicchio, okra(my personal favorite), various peppers and zucchini. We will see what actually happens. I hope that we get to grow everything! I will keep you posted on the progress of the building, planting, growing and harvest.

I have been told that I should post some "how to's" for gardening. What do you all think about that? Let me know.

A side note, I haven't posted in a while because Dave's grandfather, Pop, passed away about 2 weeks ago on his 83rd birthday. We were driving back and forth to Macon every night for a week and then then stayed down there the weekend after he passed. It was tough and will be without Pop around. We will miss him.

Currently we are getting ready for our spring break trip to Jekyll Island. We are camping for the week. I am soooo looking forward to having nothing to do but ride our borrowed bicycles around the island, bask in the sun, read a few books and cook some yummy food! I am hoping to post some while we are there. Until then, Happy Spring!

Wow. When you do a garden, you do it right! I think it's a great idea. You've got the space and skills. I look forward to your rejects.

I'm sorry to hear about Dave's grandfather. That's hard.

I would love it if you posted gardening how-to's advice. Starting with maybe natural/non-toxic pest control? :)

We just planted our strawberry plants in our strawberry pot. I'm so excited! We'll probably do tomatoes later in the month once it warms up for good here in the cold north.

Missing you.

Hey Kara!

Sorry to hear about the loss in your family!
I find it fun to read your blogs, especially now you're planning a veggie garden; I have a very small one myself (see my blog: http://jacoline-dutchmommy.blogspot.com/). I don't know how big your garden is, but are aware of the fact that veggies like cucumber, eggplant, watermelon, cantaloupe and zucchini take a lot of space? They can grow all over the place... But you are right; the veggies are yummy, so if you have the space; fill it up! I wish I had the space for things like cucumber...
Have fun planting and keep us posted!

Love,
Jacoline.
